WALHI Responds to Bank of China in regards to the Batang Toru Dam project

Dear Bank of China,

Thank you for writing back to us.

We sincerely appreciate your consideration to re-evaluate the risks associated with the Batang Toru dam project. We view your response, published on March 4 on your website, as an encouraging sign of the bank’s recognition of ours and international civil society’s concerns regarding the controversial dam project.

As Bank of China conducts an evaluation, we kindly request a meeting with your team in Jakarta. We would like to discuss the concerns we have raised, and would see your acceptance of our invitation as evidence of the bank’s respect for the Indonesian people. Many of the environmental, social, and biodiversity risks are fairly complex, and so we hope a meeting can help clarify and dispel common misconceptions regarding the dam’s real impacts.

We believe that open communication with Bank of China is critical. Like Bank of China, we aim to promote environmentally friendly projects which are sustainable for both nature and people. As such, please confirm if your team can join us in Jakarta for a meeting by March 28, 2019. However, we are open for adjustment if the date doesn’t work for you.

We are confident that our international colleagues, who joined us in solidarity in highlighting the environmental and social risks of the Batang Toru Dam project from more than 10 countries on March 1, would welcome Bank of China’s interest in starting a meaningful dialogue on these matters with us.

Thank you for your kind attention. We look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards,

Dana Tarigan
Executive Director
